10/20/2025Around 70 percent of all technical innovations are based on newly developed materials. The topic of sustainability is becoming increasingly important in this context. The Sustainable Materials Engineering degree programme enables students to be part of a sustainable society and to contribute to the decarbonization and modernization of industry while also offering them excellent job prospects. As pioneers of the circular economy, graduates drive innovations that are made possible by new, better or cheaper materials. The course is all about increasing sustainability in the field of materials. Examples include the low-carbon production and recycling of materials or the need for innovation linked to the use of hydrogen in the areas of mobility, buildings and industry. Material design creates a key foundation: in addition to pure materials, innovative combinations are being tested in which different materials are combined with each other to create a customized product that has the characteristics of both starting materials. For example, composite materials are being developed that do not conduct heat and are therefore ideal for use as insulation. Another area of research deals with material production: tailor-made material development, for example to produce intelligent surfaces, biocompatible materials or materials for lightweight construction. A third focus of materials technology is on innovative manufacturing processes for new materials, for example the reduction of weight and material usage through 3D-printed components. When optimizing manufacturing, processing and recycling processes, special attention is paid not only to efficiency, but also to environmental compatibility: exhaust gases are reduced, waste products are recycled and energy is recovered. When developing new materials and processes or optimizing them, research always focuses on the sustainable use of existing resources in addition to functionality and cost-effectiveness. From metals, glasses and ceramics to plastics and high-performance composites ? the expertise of engineers trained in materials technology at RWTH covers the entire spectrum of materials and their entire life cycle.
