10/20/2025Are you considering a physics degree, but aren?t sure whether your subject knowledge up to this point is sufficient? Many prospective students have a keen interest in physics, but at the same time, they have real concerns when starting a physics degree program: Will my prior knowledge be sufficient? What if I wasn?t able to take an advanced physics course at my high school? What if I could not even take a basic course? How will I be able to cope with the wealth of material if I need to catch up on many things? What if my high school graduation was some time ago? These doubts are well-founded with this demanding course of study ? both in terms of content and time. The Department of Physics takes them seriously and offers prospective students the opportunity to extend their studies to eight semesters with the Physics Plus program as an alternative to the regular six-semester physics bachelor?s program. With two additional semesters, this course of study provides enough time to acquire the indispensable basic knowledge at a less hurried pace and to join the standard course of study at a later point. The program teaches the same body of knowledge as the regular physics course of studies and leads to the same degree but allows for a more comprehensive introductory phase due to the longer study time. Those first-year students with doubts about their prior school knowledge being satisfactory are thus allowed to catch up and improve their foundational expertise during the first year of study. This concerns especially basic calculation methods and mathematical modeling, i.e., describing a quantitative problem through a mathematical approach. Besides, basic knowledge of information technology, especially in programming, is built from the beginning of the course. Students of the extended course of study also receive further support during the higher semesters, such as tutorials in theoretical physics. In addition to the complex subject-related courses, students must also take general education courses as part of the so-called Studium Generale, allowing them to gain essential qualifications such as knowledge of the English language. The Studium Generale thus rounds off the study of physics and enables students to look beyond the subject of physics: it provides optional insights into the neighboring disciplines of chemistry, computer science, and mathematics or into fields of application of physics such as electronics and medicine. Students also have the opportunity to become acquainted with philosophy or business administration, or they can complete an internship with a firm or research group.
