10/20/2025From medicines to functional foods, smartphone displays, and biofuels, chemistry forms the basis for many products in modern life. It provides knowledge about the structure of all the substances that surround us?from the smallest particles, atoms, and molecules, to everyday products such as detergents, to very large molecules such as human DNA. Chemistry students not only learn how substances are structured, they also learn how they are synthesized and how their properties and functions can be determined. This includes predicting the structure of new compounds in order of be able to produce materials that have the desired properties. At RWTH, students learn important aspects of industrial applications at an early stage, such as how to use reactions in large-scale production or manufacturing and using polymers. To gain the necessary knowledge, students study the three classic branches of chemistry: inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry? these fields are supplemented by an early introduction to technical chemistry and macromolecular chemistry. In addition to the fundamentals of chemistry, students in the Chemistry Plus bachelor's program can choose from a wide range of interdisciplinary courses to develop a skill set that is tailored to their personal interests. The Chemistry Plus program is designed for anyone interested in studying chemistry who enjoys experimenting and is enthusiastic about chemical research and development. The flexible start date and the option to tailor the program to individual needs are particularly beneficial for prospective students who: The traditional chemistry program enables students to acquire a wide range of knowledge in a short period of time. A tight schedule and a quick start to the program mean that there is little flexibility and individuality in the skills that they acquire. The Chemistry Plus program offers this flexibility and customization: in eight semesters instead of six, students acquire the same technical skills that are taught in the traditional bachelor's program in chemistry, while also having a wider range of options to choose from, including in non-chemical fields. The flexible structure of the program allows students to start in the summer semester. A customized module offering for the start of the program enables all interested students to find their way around the new subject area and provides a solid foundation of skills that will be used throughout the program. A particular advantage of the Chemistry Plus concept is the improved opportunity to integrate a stay abroad. It goes without saying that the program continues to be based on the advanced, fundamental qualifications of the chemistry program, so that the transition to a master's program and a potential change of university are possible without any additional requirements even after completing the Chemistry Plus bachelor's program. Overall, the Chemistry Plus bachelor's program enables students to expand their knowledge and experience beyond the technical skills of chemistry and to acquire a skill set that is geared toward the improved development of interdisciplinary issues.
