7/15/2026The Mechatronics program at TUHH includes a core area (126 credit points) with a compulsory elective module (i.e. the possibility to choose between one of three modules), as well as a specialization (42 credit points) with own compulsory elective modules, as well as the bachelor thesis in the 6th semester. The core area is fundamentally oriented, both in terms of the tools every engineer needs (mathematics, computer science, materials, measurement and control technology) and specifically in terms of the first team projects (design project). In mechatronics, it also includes fundamentals of mechanics and electrical engineering and electronics on an equal footing. The specializations combine specific courses of the respective area, depending on the selection. This always includes a further specialization either in the context of electrical engineering, information or mechanics, as well as a series of special lectures around the typical products and product components of the specialization. Regardless of the choice of specialization in combination with the core area, the mechatronics engineer will always be equally trained in all typical engineering disciplines, and will have gained an extended insight in one direction according to their specialization in the area of "dynamics", i.e. the description of systems that change rapidly and move, oscillate, exchange energies. In addition to these technical competencies, competencies in the area of teamwork and product development are taught in particular, in order to recognize and consider the importance and significance of interface definitions at an early stage.

Mechatronics is the right field of study for you if ... ? your enthusiasm for research extends to different areas. ? you want to understand how systems function as a whole. ? you are interested in mechanics, electrical engineering and programming. When studying mechatronics at Hamburg University of Technology, you can expect a lot of practical work, trying things out and building things. You also have to do a lot of calculations, so mathematics is always part of your studies.
