7/15/2026The course has three pillars Mathematics provides central foundations for both computer science and engineering. Computer science shows how programs and computer systems can be implemented and how this can be achieved even under tight constraints, for example with regard to energy consumption or data transfer. The engineering area uses the fundamentals of electrical engineering, communications engineering and control engineering to establish the connection between the digital computer system and the real world. After the essential foundations of the three pillars have been laid, some content can be chosen more freely. The IIW internship is particularly exciting. This is a team project in which small groups of students develop a system. The topics change annually, and students choose their projects based on their personal preferences. The individual groups are then closely supervised by research groups from the Dean's Office E. ? You can find an example video below. Specialization in an application area is possible by following one of the pattern progressions: Embedded systems: Small computing systems are hidden in almost everything and are “the brain”. Smart grids: Power grids must be smart in order to reliably integrate numerous energy producers – including small private ones – with many consumers – including large industrial ones. Medical technology systems: Today's medical technology is working wonders – here the technical aspect from intelligent support to autonomous systems is considered. Computational Foundations: Efficiency of computations is essential, from battery-powered systems to large server farms – the algorithms behind them are crucial.
