7/15/2026Since the introduction of the internet, digitalization has massively changed our everyday lives. Milestones included the invention of digital photography and the development of the modern smartphone, which fundamentally changed our communication methods and forms. Due to these societal developments, the field of data science evolved from mathematical statistics and computer science and has now become a key technology in science, industry, and the everyday lives of most people. ? Data science aims to extract features and knowledge from large amounts of data. This results in a data-driven model that is not based on physical equations but is derived directly from the data. Achieving this requires three scientific disciplines: Statistics provides the appropriate mathematical tools . Computer science enables the implementation of mathematical models through efficient algorithms and ensures the representation, processing, provision and storage of data. The third scientific area is the so-called application domain . For applications in medicine, for example, knowledge of anatomy and physiology is necessary in order to extract disease patterns from the collected image and laboratory data. If you choose to study data science at TUHH, you will develop new methods and algorithms yourself! To achieve this, it's essential that you first understand the mathematical and theoretical foundations, which you'll gradually develop with our support. However, we don't want to lose the practical relevance, which is why we'll always show you examples of how data science can be used throughout your studies. If you're particularly interested in an application—for example, medicine or logistics—you can delve deeper into it as part of an elective module. You'll also explore data security and ethics during your studies, so you learn how to handle data responsibly. Our Data Science Bachelor's program is essentially a computer science degree, so you'll have access to a wide range of computer science-related programs in your Master's program. ? To give you a better idea of how much mathematics and computer science content you can expect in your Data Science studies, the pie chart shown shows the different proportions.
