8/31/2025The two-year master's degree program in German-Portuguese Studies/Estudos Luso-Alemães (MA DPS) is a double degree program offered in cooperation with the Universidade do Minho Braga. At Goethe University, the program is run by the Institute for Romance Languages and Literatures. At the Universidade do Minho Braga, the program is located at the Departamento de Estudos Germanísticos e Eslavos (DEGE) of the Instituto de Letras e Ciências Humanas. The master's degree course is comparative. In Frankfurt, the focus is on comparison with other Romance languages and literatures. In Braga, due to the connection to German studies, the focus is on comparative work on academic issues from a German and Lusitanian perspective. A stay abroad at the partner university is firmly integrated into the curriculum and is made possible by an existing Erasmus cooperation. The research-oriented master's program builds on the bachelor's level and deepens and expands the literary and linguistic knowledge acquired therein as well as foreign language skills in the area of Portuguese. In the third semester, a specialization in the area of literary/cultural studies or the area of linguistics is planned. A completed master's degree forms the basis for further qualification as part of a doctoral program. However, due to its transnational and multilingual dimension, the degree program also offers prospects for other professional fields. The comparative studies course includes a comparative examination of scientific questions from a Germanic and Lusitanian perspective, but also an embedding in larger contexts, for example in comparison with other Romance languages and literatures. In the field of linguistics, the focus is on questions of multilingualism and language contact research, with particular emphasis on the link between empirically oriented linguistics and modern linguistic models of language competence. In the field of literary studies, the intercultural dependencies of Portuguese and German culture are given greater emphasis. At both the Goethe University Frankfurt and the Universidade do Minho, the valence of Portuguese and German culture in the arts (film, painting, music) plays an important role. Furthermore, the course also provides practical professional qualifications in the field of translation and digital editing techniques and excellent language skills in Portuguese.
