6/30/2025The subject of the consecutive and research-oriented master's program in European Literatures and Cultures is the literature and cultures of Europe in their historical, systematic, and socio-cultural contexts from antiquity to the present. The focus is on literary cultural production, reception, and transfer processes both within the European horizon and in the relationships between European and non-European cultural areas. Particular attention is paid to the tension between tradition and transformation as well as the interactions of literature with other arts, media, and cultural forms of knowledge. The program follows a decidedly comparative and interdisciplinary approach ; it combines philological with cultural and media studies questions and methods. The program aims to acquire in-depth knowledge of European literature and cultures in their historical genesis and their current structures. Students acquire the ability to reflect on and analyze complex literary and cultural phenomena in a methodologically and theoretically sound manner. An integral part of the training is the acquisition of both comprehensive competencies in dealing with inter- and transcultural problems as well as practical skills in the field of public literature and culture mediation at home and abroad.
